How To Make These Prosciutto and Mini Mozzarella Bird Nests

Ingredients You’ll Need For This Recipe

  • 8 slices of prosciutto
  • 24 mini mozzarella balls
  • A handful of green salad leaves
  • ½ teaspoon black sesame seeds
  • ½ teaspoon white sesame seeds (optional)

For serving (optional):

  • Crackers or mini toasts
  • Cream cheese

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Carefully separate the prosciutto slices so they don’t tear.

2. Working with one slice at a time, start at one end and gently fold it inward toward and around the center, shaping it into a small nest.

As you go, lightly press and squeeze the edges together so the nest holds its shape.

3. Place each formed nest directly onto your serving tray as you go, so they don’t fall apart later, as prosciutto can be very delicate.

4. Tear the green salad leaves into smaller pieces and place a few inside each nest. This creates a soft base and gives that sweet “bird nest” look.

5. Drain the mini mozzarella balls and gently pat them dry with a paper towel.

6. Place three mozzarella balls into each nest, arranging them with the narrower side facing up so they resemble little eggs.

7. Mix the black and white sesame seeds together and sprinkle them lightly over the mozzarella balls to create tiny speckles.

8. Scatter a few extra sesame seeds on your serving tray for a finished, styled look.

9. Cover the tray and refrigerate for up to 2 hours before serving. Serve chilled or slightly cool.

10. Serve with crackers or cream cheese and mini toasts if you like, or as part of an appetizer tray.

Important Recipe Notes

  • Prosciutto slices are thin and delicate, so it’s best to shape the nests and place them on the serving tray right away, instead of moving them later and risking that they’ll tear.
  • You can substitute prosciutto with other thinly sliced cured meats or ham, as long as they’re flexible enough to shape into nests. Ideally, you’d look for slices that are long and thin.
  • I made smaller nests with three mozzarella “eggs” each, but you can make larger nests and add more cheese if you prefer.
  • I planned two nests per person when serving, so this exact recipe is suitable for 4 people. Adjust the quantities based on how many guests you’ll have.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • It’s a super-easy, 4-ingredient recipe that takes only 10 minutes to put together. And there’s no cooking involved!
  • Although it’s made with such simple ingredients, the “nests” come out really cute, and this pretty, playful presentation is perfect for spring or Easter parties.
  • Although shaped into little bird nests, the prosciutto-mozzarella pairing is a classic appetizer combo that everybody loves.
  • It’s easy to scale up for parties whenever you’re hosting more people.
  • The little nests are a light appetizer that pairs well with many spreads. Or they can be the centrepiece if you add some crackers/mini toasts and cream cheese for serving.
